Honest Lies...

( A weekend and very random blog)

"Pretty much all the honest truth-telling there is in the world is done by children." -  Oliver Wendell Holmemen quotes (American physician, poet, writer, humorist and professor at Harvard, 1809-1894)

I had yet to outlive my teenage, I delved in my own beliefs. A typical teenager who is unperturbed by the ghastly truth of the human race and believing that the grass is greener everywhere. Someone who has no idea of a pool of men/woman who transgress, who frame and follow rules as per their convenience, and merrily flout the basics of humanity. A society where the ’supposedly’ good acts are qualified for a selected  class ( the religious heads, swami’s et al.. )

The incidence goes likes this..I was returning from a water-park with friends in a ferry quite tired after a day-long picnic. It was dark and thankfully I was away from the coterie, sitting with a kid of around 8 years. We entered into a conversation, with that eagerness to answer I believed liked my company (I believe it’s only my age-group which ignores me!).

After finishing the usual FAQ’s he asked my name. Seemed indifferent by my answer, he asked my religion – Aap hindu hain? (are you a hindu?) I replied in negative. There was a strange expression of awkwardness, visible on his face. He abruptly broke the conversation acting as if he never knew me! I felt strange, that a kid who was so friendly with me is suddenly acting as if we never talked!  I obviously couldn’t forget this. This episode left an indelible mark and raised several questions unanswered.

A large section of society is still enslaved by hatred and not aware of its perils. The rot of bias, prejudice, hatred, and a deeply rooted religious fascism.

Who told the boy that non-hindus aren’t meant to be talked to? Clearly, the society has erred in this front and erred big time. The inherent message of peace and humanity is what religion teaches, why is that misconstrued? Teach your kids that, The foremost teachings of every religion in this world is Humantity. We are lying our kids, to ourselves. Don't blame anybody, the onus is on us for diverging from our core values. Something which our forefathers cherished. They weren't technologically advanced, but psychologically  they definitely were ahead. Think.

“Children are the future of the society, when you play with your future you're causing an irreparable damage.”

There is a generalised inference from the above story and not intended to target any section, class of society. Holistic view is required.

The truth is religions were never inclusive but by their very nature exclusive. We have exceptions, but essentially religion thrives from the exclusive We vs They kind of teachings.

Agree, by making our kids slaves to our own bigotry we are depriving them a better future. But then religions are not bothered about that. If we go through the world history, we find that maximum wars, persecutions and exoduses were caused in the name of religions!

So, don't be surprised by the attitude of the tutored child. Understand that and keep striving to bring better human values and understanding among fellow human beings.. That is the need of the hour!
